Natural environment of elementary / middle schools of Puerto Rico: Latent giants waiting for a natural revitalization

Abstract:

The loss of integration and disconnection with nature has been recognized by writer Richard Louv as Nature Deficit Syndrome. Cultural changes, technological dependency, growth of populations, urban sprawl and lack of open spaces in the residential and educational environment are some of the causes for this disconnection. The Nature Deficit Syndrome leads to negative consequences with regards to the physical and mental health of children.

This thesis examines the present disconnection in the school ground, the classrooms, and natural environments of Elementary and Middle Schools, "Escuelas Segundas Unidades (ESU)". The focus of this study is directed to find alternative designs that will improve the relationship between children and the natural environment. These interventions will enhance the lifestyle of children by changing the built environment, so that its use would increase the children's interest for nature (Moore, 2008) and renew both their physical and mental health.
