Flood magnitude estimation for streams in Puerto Rico

Abstract:

Several studies have been published over the past four decades to develop regional regression equations to estimate flood peaks in Puerto Rico. Substantial additional data are available since the last study (Ramos-Guinés, 1999) to develop a better representation of the hydrologic conditions of the Island. The study focused on the development of a set of regional regression equations to estimate peak streamflow for streams in Puerto Rico.

The study encompassed two major elements, a frequency and a regression analysis. In the frequency analysis several distributions were analyzed to determine the most adequate for Puerto Rico. Stepwise regression techniques were employed in the regression analysis to determine the physical and climatic parameters of the watershed to be used in the final regression model. The final model were developed using generalized least square regression techniques.
