Context versus rote learning in the martial arts

Abstract:

Previous research has shown that in the context of learning martial arts katas or forms, adults with little to no martial arts experience retained the information better "when the katas were taught with the context method than when the katas were taught with the no context method." (Tovar, M.) Given the potential importance of these findings it is imperative more experimentation be performed in the area because the findings do not relate to another portion of the population specifically that of children. A group of children between the ages of seven and twelve with nine months or less of martial arts experience were instructed two original katas, or forms, using two different ways of instruction.
