College Students' Epistemologies and Experiences as Predictors of Attitudes Toward Diversity

Abstract:

Diversity is an important value emphasized on contemporary college campuses. To further the understanding of students’ attitudes toward diversity, 284 undergraduates completed assessments of their personal epistemology and experiences with diversity. These independent variables were measured using the Attitudes About Reality Scale and diversity related items from the College Student Experience Questionnaire. The Attitudes Toward Cultural Diversity and Pluralism Scale measured the dependent variable, attitudes toward diversity. A multiple regression analysis showed that students’ personal epistemology was not a significant predictor and that experience with diversity was a significant predictor (p<.05) of attitudes toward diversity. These findings indicate that the more exposure undergraduate students have to diverse experiences, the more positive is their attitude toward diverse populations.
