Abstract:

After more than five years of employment as a substitute mathematics teacher, in addition to ten plus years of tutoring adolescent students in mathematics, I came to recognize a recurring theme that many of the students expressed little or no interest in the material taught. I decided to conduct an investigation into this recurring theme in order to determine what factors were behind this lack of interest. I thought it was most appropriate to go straight to the source, the students. Fellow mathematics teachers, in addition to teachers across other disciplines, were also canvassed not only to confirm that they observed the a similar recurring theme as I did, but to solidify my theory that a need existed for a best practice portfolio in mathematics education that would help to create an environment in the mathematics classrooms that would make the curriculum culturally relevant and aid in providing a connection from the curriculum to the student, and ultimately from the classroom to the real world.
