"Symphony Northwest": New music and youth orchestras

Abstract:

The youth orchestra is a viable ensemble for new music, yet it is one that is not often considered by contemporary composers. This project investigates the compositional process within the confines of certain reasonable musical limits that must be given special consideration in the composition of new music for youth orchestras, and attempts to show that it is possible to create music that is accessible to younger musicians within a more contemporary musical vocabulary. This project is significant for two reasons: because the medium of the youth orchestra often overlooked by contemporary composers and because some of these young musicians will fill the professional orchestras of the future. The outcome of this project is a large-scale work tailored specifically to meet the needs of the twenty-first century youth orchestra.
