The use of play in the treatment of encopresis: A case study

Abstract:

In an effort to further enhance the literature regarding the treatment of children struggling KAB with encopresis, this thesis is a reflection on and analysis of a single female child and her treatment process. The thesis follows the process by which a beginning therapist worked with and modified evolving formulations of the case, gaining understanding through theoretical and therapeutic means, especially play therapy. By detailing the content and progression of the play, this case study shows the development of this case's conceptualization. This, in turn, is used to formulate appropriate interventions to address intra-familial relationships in an effort to effect change, including a reduction in the encopretic symptoms. The case is then discussed through the lens of Kohut's Self Psychology and the functions of the selfobject in this child's development. Play within the therapeutic setting was used to understand the effective and ineffective selfobjects which led this particular child into treatment for encopresis.
