How does the implementation of literature circles influence student achievement and attitudes towards reading in the classroom?

Abstract:

The purpose of this action research project and study was to examine literature circles and determine the affect their use had on student achievement and interest in the Language Arts classroom. The participants in the study were the researcher's 9th grade English students. The researcher administered surveys prior to implementing literature circles, as well as after each round of implementation to determine if any change or growth in interest and achievement had been accomplished. After implementing the strategy, the researcher solicited a written response from each participant as to the individual participant's reactions to, growth from, and impressions of the implemented literature circle method. The results of this study did not show concrete evidence of an increase in academic achievement, but rather overall, the researcher determined that the strategy did, in fact, increase student interest in reading. The researcher will continue to implement this method in the Language Arts classroom, as the increase in the level of interest shown is beneficial to the student participants and their successors.
