Monstrosity of the soul: Confession and terror in James Hogg and Edgar Allan Poe

Abstract:

This paper analyzes the subversion of confession seen in "Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner" by James Hogg and selected stories of Edgar Allan Poe. Using a theoretical framework informed by Michel Foucault, the paper demonstrates how both authors complicate the implicit power relationship of confession and blur the binary of discursive control. The paper also considers the implications of disturbing the religious and legal discursive rituals of confession within the context of Gothic conventions.
