Abstract:

Contemporary jazz modal harmony and composition pedagogy is an underdeveloped area, which shows as one of its characteristics a lack of published material for undergraduate level. In addition, the available texts on the mentioned topic do not bridge a clear path between what is currently composed and recorded in the jazz industry, and the composition student. Most of these books are publications merely explaining the old and overused tonal system. This situation has made the craft of teaching contemporary jazz composition and advanced modal harmony a job difficult to achieve.

The overall purpose of this study is to create a method for college students that seeks to expand the harmonic and compositional language of jazz music, through the use of synthetic scales and twentieth century music compositional techniques applied to the style of jazz.
