Application of performance measures to traffic signal system acceptance

Abstract:

The current state of practice lacks easily applied performance metrics for evaluating signalized intersections and corridors. To address this, a suite of performance measures has been developed to aid the engineer in quantifying the efficiency of signalized intersections, and also aid in optimizing the performance of such. This thesis proposes a framework for a simple and user-friendly computer program that would generate these performance measures, allowing engineers to easily assess the status of all of the intersections under their jurisdiction, and improve any that exhibit substandard operations. Finally, several real-world examples illustrating the use of such performance measures have been included, to show the ease of use and efficacy of these measures.
