Effective interventions used by occupational therapists in cardiac rehabilitation: A systematic literature review
by Feroni, Christina M.|Thielke, Andrew J., M.S.|M.S., THE COLLEGE OF ST. SCHOLASTICA, 2010|2010, 60 pages; 1479374

Abstract:

Cardiac rehabilitation is used to treat a wide variety of diagnoses including myocardial infarction (MI), congestive heart failure (CHF), and valvular disease. Medical treatments and surgical interventions can be done to repair any damage to the heart or disease affecting heart function. Cardiac rehabilitation employs a multidisciplinary approach to effectively treat clients and help them return to independent living after a cardiac event. This systematic literature review was completed in order to find the most effective interventions used by occupational therapists for cardiac rehabilitation. The articles that were found described three general types of intervention that fall within the scope of practice for occupational therapy, including assisting with activities of daily living, developing exercise programs, and education about stress management. Further research is needed to better understand the occupational therapist’s role in cardiac rehabilitation.
