Design of wireless cardiogram system for acute and long term health care monitoring
by Sambaraju, Venkat Krishna, M.S., NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY, 2010, 90 pages; 1477057

Abstract:

In this thesis, a prototype circuit that captures patient’s electrocardiogram (ECG) and phonocardiogram (PCG) and transmits wirelessly is presented. The system built would be useful for monitoring patients at homes, clinics, nursing homes and rural health care units. This prototype consists of three units: ECG unit, PCG unit and the remote unit. The ECG unit and the PCG unit are the sensor units that acquire the patient’s ECG and heart sounds and transmit the data to the remote unit. Each of the sensor units consists of a physiological sensor, a signal processing circuitry and an nRF24LE1 system on chip for transmitting the signals. The nRF24LE1 chip is an ultra low power wireless chip that has a microcontroller, an A/D converter, a RF transceiver and other peripherals on the same chip. The remote unit also contains an nRF24LE1 chip for receiving the signals and interfacing to a computer to view the received signals. Experimental results show that with this system it is possible to transmit ECG and PCG data to a distance of 100 ft, which is enough for heart monitoring at homes and clinics.

About ProQuest Dissertations & Theses
With over 2.3 million records, the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (PQDT) database is the most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses in the world. It is the database of record for graduate research.

The database includes citations of graduate works ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester. Of the 2.3 million graduate works included in the database, ProQuest offers more than 1.9 million in full text formats. Of those, over 860,000 are available in PDF format. More than 60,000 dissertations and theses are added to the database each year.
