Evaluation of alkali silica reaction prediction equations with ternary blended cements

Abstract:

The study presented herein formulated 105 ternary mixture designs combining two portland cements and four blended cements with seven supplementary cementitious materials (SCM). The 105 ternary mixtures along with 12 control mixtures were tested according to ASTM C 1567 Determining the Potential Alkali-Silica Reactivity of Combinations of Cementitious Materials and Aggregate (Accelerated Mortar-Bar Method) with the addition of graded Pyrex glass aggregate to increase the reactive silica content of the aggregate.

It was concluded that ternary mixtures combining ASTM C 618 Class F fly ash, ASTM C 989 GGBFS, ASTM C 1240 silica fume, and ASTM C 618 Class N metakaolin have the potential to mitigate alkali-silica reaction in concrete containing highly reactive aggregates. However, the mass combinations of cementitious materials are different for each pozzolan. ASTM C 618 Class C fly ash with cement replacement levels of 30% combined with other pozzolans may provide alkali-silica reaction mitigation. However, ASTM C 618 Class C fly ash requires additional testing before being used to mitigate alkali-silica reaction. ASTM C 1240 silica fume can be used in ternary blends to mitigate alkali-silica reaction at cement replacement levels of 3 to 7%. However, the use of ASTM C 1240 silica fume in binary mixtures is not recommended for exposed applications.
