Impacts of the spectral variability of material reflectances and lamp power distributions on computer lighting calculations

Abstract:

A method for accounting for the spectral variability of material reflectances and lamp power distributions in computer lighting calculations is described. A basic review of the gray assumption is conducted, along with a review of how flux distributions and surface reflectances vary by wavelength. A detailed description of how to manipulate SPD and reflectance data is conducted. The creation of a Radiance simulation model is discussed. Methods for combing and manipulating data in Radiance are described. The error in illuminance simulations for varying spectral band sizes is shown, and appropriate band sizes for improved accuracy while maintaing quick calculation times are discussed.
