African American and Latino youth residing in South Los Angeles may face multiple risk factors that influence their overall functioning. The purpose of this project was to design a community-based mentoring program, identify potential funding, and complete a grant proposal for the pilot program at Personal Involvement Center in South Los Angeles, California. The mentoring program was designed to provide adolescents with supportive and positive role models, access to resources, opportunities to strengthen parent-child and peer relationships, improve self-esteem, reduce antisocial behaviors, and promote healthy relationships in an effort to lower the incidence of child abuse in the community. Implications for social work practice are discussed. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant were not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.
