The impact of the media on public opinion of the police

Abstract:

This project report examines the relationship between the media and public opinion of the police. Research asserts that news and entertainment media have varying effects on the audience's opinion. The media's portrayal of an incident may paint an event as a worst-case scenario, or the media can play the role of "watchdog" for local and national communities. This report describes, in detail, the impact that the news and entertainment media have on the way that the public perceives police departments and their services. Specific focus was given to the infamous cases involving Rodney King; Devin Brown; Don Jackson; and a Cincinnati, Ohio, youth. This project's methodology was based on archival data retrieved from the Website database of the library at California State University, Long Beach.
