The National Cowboy Poetry gathering: Does it promote the unique regional voices of the American West?
by Orr, John R., M.A., CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2009, 83 pages; 1472182

Abstract:

The annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, was the first and, after twenty-four years, remains the leading event of its kind. The sponsor of this annual gathering, the Western Folklife Center, has as a primary part of its mission the preservation of the varied and unique cowboy and ranching cultures of the western United States, and the center considers the annual poetry gathering as a significant part of this preservation effort. This position implies that varied and unique cultures are reflected in the poetry presented at each annual gathering.

However, a review of verse from representative poets associated with the twenty-four year history of the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, using characteristics common to cowboy poetry, did not reveal a significant reflection of these unique cultures. Instead, these poets present a common cowboy poetry culture while interjecting their unique styles.
