English language learners in mainstream classrooms and key factors that play a role in their success

Abstract:

A variety of opinions exist today with regards to English language learners (ELL). The opinions as well as unwarranted biases held by some staff members and students toward ELL students may adversely affect the outcomes of these students. There are so many variables ELL students face when immersed in mainstream English-speaking classrooms such as home/school discontinuities, parent involvement, socioeconomic status, identity issues, the rate of language acquisition, etc. Individual needs are specific to each student as well as their culture/family and no two students will be the same. Whether the student is a native English-speaker or if they are just beginning to attend an English-speaking school and already speak a language other than English each student deserves to be treated equally. Each student deserves opportunities for academic growth in the United States in an unbiased environment that is conducive to learning for all.
