The changing experiences and challenges of internal migrants in China: Female migrant workers in Beijing hotel industry

Abstract:

While internal migration in China has been extensively researched, investigation into how gender interacts with the changing environment especially in hotel industry has been less explicitly considered. This study, using mainly secondary materials, supplemented with first hand data collected from the current Beijing hotel industry, has provided a brief account of the dynamics of China's internal migration process from a gender perspective. I also conducted case study with four specific hotels in the city of Beijing, each represent different kind of ownership. Theses cases illustrate the general situation of female migrant workers in the hotel context. Findings generated from this research suggest that, the shifting power of "push and pull" has bestowed the first and the second migrant generation significant character differences. The impact of the increasing second generation migrants on social and regional development requires further attention both nationally and locally. Based on all the facts and findings, I bring out several policy implications in regarding to the unique situation facing the second migrant generation. Those policies should be evaluated not only with respect to their ability to remove this specific population from life-threatening impoverishment but also their capacity to promote the long-term development and well-being of this floating population.
