The deaths of the conquistadores
by Koch, Randy J., M.F.A., UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING, 2009, 88 pages; 1470685

Abstract:

The Deaths of the Conquistadores is a series of dramatic monologues, each in the voice or thoughts of a Spanish conquistador in the moments prior to his or her death. These poems are not intended to celebrate or romanticize the Spaniards or their deeds nor to force them to confess to their frequent brutality and greed but to explore their psychological, spiritual, and emotional states and to bring to life their individual roles—major or minor—in the conquest of the Americas and its aftermath. Each poem is followed by a footnote that provides historical context and biographical details of the subject’s role in the conquest and the circumstances of his or her death.
