Optimization of PTV-GC-muECD for the analysis of PBDE-209

Abstract:

PBDE 209 (Decabrominated diphenyl ether) is the only commercially produced brominated flame retardant among the PBDEs. Owing to the toxicity of PBDE 209 and the absence of any legislative measures that restrict the use of PBDE 209, the levels of PBDE 209 in the environment and the biological systems have to be monitored. But, the thermolabile nature of the congener poses a potential threat for this objective to be accomplished. Gas chromatography has been used over the years for the analysis of volatile organic pollutants. This study discussed the use of a GC coupled to a PTV injector and an ECD for the analysis of PBDE 209. The PTV was operated in a Temperature Programmed Pulsed Splitless mode. The conditions for the analysis of PBDE 209 with a PTV injector operated in this mode were optimized using a statistical design called as the Plackett Burman design. The method was validated according to a standard protocol. The MDL and MQL for the method were found out to be 0.51ng/ml and 1.80 ng/ml respectively. The degradation of PBDE 209 was also monitored in the current study.
