Walking home backwards: E. Pauline Johnson as a Victorian "new woman" in her lifestyle, writing, and advocacy
by Prescott, Taryn, M.A., STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT BUFFALO, 2009, 104 pages; 1469118

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to explore the life and creative writing of E. Pauline Johnson both within and outside of the cultural and social norms of the Victorian era. Many facets of Johnson's lifestyle did not match the average Victorian woman's, from Native and non-Native cultural and political viewpoints, along with variables of her independence, including exposure to traveling and being involved in the professional world of non-Native men.
