Puberty and relationships 101: A guide to growing up for high functioning adolescent males with autism spectrum disorders

Abstract:

Sexuality education for males with high functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) is critical, yet it has not received the attention in the literature that is warranted. Adolescent males with high functioning ASDs face unique issues regarding sexuality due to the nature of the disorder. To date there has not been an empirical attempt to address these issues with group-based educational approach developed specifically for adolescents with high functioning ASDs. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of an eight-week psycho-educational sexuality curriculum for adolescent males with high functioning ASDs. Curriculum development was based on current literature on sexuality development. Seven adolescent males and their parents were recruited for the current study. Measures included adolescent self-report, parent-report and parent self-report during pre-group and post-group phases. Parents and adolescents created two goals each for the adolescent achieve by the end of the group sessions. By post-group, comfort levels discussing sexuality significantly increased for both teens and parents. Additionally, teens and parents both progressed (and in some cases) achieved their goals. Conversely, the results did not yield significant results for a change in teen sexual knowledge and parental worry and acceptance of their sons' sexuality. The teens' and parent's reaction were generally positive.
