The use of an informational DVD to attract potential speech-language pathologist students: Is it more effective than traditional methods?

Abstract:

Research indicates that there is a shortage of speech-language pathologists within the United States. One way to help increase the number of people entering the field is to introduce the profession to high school juniors and seniors when they are deciding what career they might be interested to pursue in college. The basic marketing folders that universities send out for promotion to potential students are usually brochures and pamphlets. This way of advertising is only visual; however research indicates that effective marketing should be both audio as well as visual. An informational DVD should be introduced to the basic marketing folder because it has the ability to show both the sights and the sounds of a university. The purpose of the study, therefore, is to determine if an informational DVD is more effective than standard paper methods in influencing a student’s decision to apply to a Speech-Language Pathology program.
