The incorporation of memory mechanisms into the Meta-RaPS constructive phase with application to the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem

Abstract:

This thesis presents an implementation of element fitness and recency into the constructive phase of Meta-heuristic for Randomized Priority Search (Meta-RaPS). The new algorithm is applied to the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem with machine-dependent and sequence-dependent setup times with the objective of minimizing the maximum completion time (the makespan). Meta-RaPS with memory mechanisms is able to get better solutions in less computational time than existing heuristics for this NP-hard problem. This thesis presents the design of memory mechanisms and evaluates its performance by comparing the solutions to an existing heuristic for the same problem. Results show that memory mechanisms improve Meta-RaPS performance and outperform, to the author's knowledge, all other existing heuristics for this problem.
