We got the beat: Transcendentalism, Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," and the inception of a new, Postmodern generation
by Fogel, Lynn Michelle, M.A., UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 2009, 89 pages; 1467417

Abstract:

This thesis evaluates Allen Ginsberg's "Howl," and discerns its position in the Postmodern canon. Doing so requires extensive research into the Beat Movement, itself, of which Ginsberg was a founding member, and particularly necessitates an understanding of what attributes typified the Beats as "Postmodern." Late nineteenth century characteristics of Transcendentalism, and their influence on the Beats, as well as the influence of Eastern mysticism, especially Zen Buddhism, are also evaluated. Ginsberg's writing style, in that it came from a place of visionary and mystical origins, is also a prominent part of this work.
