Interactions between Northern Nigeria and the Arab world in the twentieth century
by Thurston, Alexander, M.A., GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY, 2009, 102 pages; 1464795

Abstract:

This essay explores contacts between Northern Nigeria and the Arab world during the twentieth century, especially through pilgrimage, educational exchange, transnational organizations, and Arab financial support for Nigerian religious and political entrepreneurs. The thesis argues both that Arab outreach to Africa reflected political rivalries in the Middle East, and also that Arab support helped anti-Sufi reformists build mass movements in Northern Nigeria in the 1960s and 1970s. These movements challenged religious, social, and political hierarchies, with effects that continue to the present day.
