Imploding state: Pakistan on the brink of collapse

Abstract:

Formed on the basis of an Islamic nationalism, the Pakistani state failed to successfully forge a supranational identity subsuming local affiliations. This paper finds that the inability to build a nation of the diverse polity has created challenges to the state's legitimacy. Further, its policies of violently suppressing any dissent, have served to alienate large swathes of its populace, who remain loyal to local rather than centrist powers. It examines movements against the centre which are gaining ground as a rejuvenated Islamist sector mounts what is potentially the most dangerous threat to the integrity of the Pakistani state.
