An examination of intervention programs for students on academic probation
by Dery, Bonnie, M.A., STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK EMPIRE STATE COLLEGE, 2009, 59 pages; 1463461

Abstract:

Freshman orientation courses geared for the first-semester or at-risk student are common in institutions of higher education. Existing freshman orientation courses typically address academic and career planning and academic skills development. This study investigates the potential association between freshman orientation courses and student retention. It includes research on instituted intervention methods community colleges have in place and it also includes contributing factors that impact student success. The findings resulted in a recommendation to change institutional policies aimed at improving student retention.
