David & Jonathan: Creating an original solo performance
by Haws, Matthew, M.F.A., UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 2009, 38 pages; 1462496

Abstract:

This thesis is an examination of the process of developing an original theatrical performance through several stages of creation. It examines the struggles and successes of the artistic work from its earliest conceptualization to the writing and revising of the script and finally in rehearsal and performance. Using this experience as a reference, the thesis examines relevant issues such as the struggle for an artist to find a unique voice, the inclusion of political and social messages in art, and the various practical and physical techniques that can support an actor's concentration and connection to their material. Various drafts of the work are presented, and the future goals and possibilities for the completed piece are then examined.
