Modeling of haptic attribute data for handwriting skill

Abstract:

This thesis describes the efforts to develop models to characterize handwriting skill. A prior concept of haptic attributes is used to estimate the parameters representing dynamics of handwriting skill. Haptic attribute data is collected for subjects performing handwriting. This data is studied and a simplified and complete representation of the data is developed. Concept of sympathetic haptics is utilized to develop algorithms to assist the novice to write based on the master's handwriting. To demonstrate this concept, a graphical user interface was developed to simulate handwriting and visualize the assistance techniques. The results show that the model developed gives a close representation of the handwriting and algorithms devised has the potential to assist a novice in mastering the handwriting skill.
