Opening the gates to learning: How does the integration of learning styles and multiple intelligences support the learning and motivation of middle school students?

Abstract:

Finding motivation to learn is often complex, especially when presented with challenging content. For an adolescent, it can be daunting to engage in learning tasks with a positive attitude that supports learning. This study examines ways to help motivate the adolescent learner. When middle school students understand their learning style and multiple intelligence and recognize how that knowledge enhances learning, they become more enthusiastic and motivated to participate in classroom learning opportunities. This study describes the experiences of two middle school students who had the opportunity to select a culminating project that matched their learning profile. The case studies of these students highlight a variety of factors influencing attitude, performance and engagement of adolescent learners.
