The play's the thing: The influence of participation in an after-school drama program on academic motivation and achievement

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine the correlations between participation in an after-school drama program and academic achievement and motivation (including attendance). Students who were voluntarily participating in the after-school musical, either as cast or crew, were selected for participation in this study. Data was collected through surveys, interviews, and studying students' academic histories. The findings of this study confirm the research that has already been published: there is a clear positive association between participating in an extracurricular drama program and students demonstrating high motivation and academic achievement in the high school setting. Students also reported other benefits of participating, including increased communication skills, high levels of self-confidence, and a higher level of social identity.
