The Saga of Burnt Njal: Book One; Fanning the Embers
by Lafayllve, Patricia M., M.A., SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY, 2008, 214 pages; 1456237

Abstract:

This creative thesis completes Part One of a work in progress. Taken as a whole, the work will represent a re-imagining of the twelfth century Icelandic family saga titled alternatively The Saga of Burnt Njal or Njal's Saga. This project takes the characters and major plot elements of the saga and sets them into twentieth century America. Hrut, therefore, becomes Paul Cavalleri, Hrut's niece Hallgerd is brought forward as Sophia Cavalleri, Mord Gigja is re-envisioned as Aidan McDonough, and so on. The majority of the action takes place in Boston, Massachusetts or Chicago, Illinois, and the characters are all members of various Italian-American and Irish-American organized crime families. This project relies on historical information from both the Medieval Icelandic and Modern American periods, the original text of Njal's Saga, and biographical information regarding key organized crime members and gang structures throughout American history, as well as the author's creative process.
