Responses of drama exhibited by participants in a drama day camp

Abstract:

This action research project examined the responses to drama exhibited by participants in a drama day camp and the effectiveness of a camp in implementing drama into children's lives. The fourteen participants consisted of children from rural Minnesota in grades second to eleventh. The data were gathered by open-ended questionnaires, observations, and surveys. These instruments were given to the participants of the drama day camp, their parents, and the researcher. The data collected by this triangulated design was reported with descriptive statistics and narrative summaries. The study focused on the following areas as suggested by research: (a) communication skills, (b) language skills, (c) teamwork, (d) socialization, (e) self esteem, (f) empathy, (g) creative thinking skills, (h) information processing skills, (i) evaluative skills, and (j) fun. Participants exhibited growth in each area studied.
