Social capital and the third choice
by Ouderkirk, Simon A., M.A., STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT BINGHAMTON, 2008, 51 pages; 1454321

Abstract:

Social Capital is a conceptual tool used by sociologists and economists to describe the inherent value which can be found within social networks. Social capital is able to provide in-group validation to choices which might otherwise be considered unappealing. These choices are defined here as 'third choices'. Many of the externalities of social capital are a direct result of the validating effect social capital can have upon third choices. The strength of this validation draws directly from the strength of a group's social ties. This paper will introduce and discuss the third choice phenomenon as a link between the individual and the community.
