Optimization of detention ponds for urbanizing watersheds

Abstract:

This thesis presents a model that serves as a tool to water resource and land development professionals that uses a simulation model and optimization algorithm to determine the near-optimal location for detention ponds in a proposed development. The thesis objectives were to (1) identify a platform for the integration of the simulation model and optimization algorithm that was also capable of modeling a topographic surface, (2) find a simulation model capable of modeling runoff and determining the storage volume required, (3) integrate the chosen model and couple it with the optimization algorithm, and (4) apply the model to a project site and evaluate the results of several model executions. The Technical Release 55: Urban Hydrology for Small Watersheds (TR-55) was chosen to be coupled with a genetic algorithm to find the near-optimal location of detention ponds that provide the required storage for the increase in runoff at the lowest cost.
