Abstract:

This study has the primary aim to verify whether the auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) result in artifact responses at high intensity air-conduction stimuli. The experiment was conducted on seven cochlear implant adults with the device off so that the ASSR thresholds could be tested at high intensity. For a secondary aim, ten normal adults were also tested to compare the thresholds between behavioral pure-tone stimuli from audiometry and mixed amplitude exponential modulated tone (AM2/FM) stimuli from ASSRs at frequencies: 500 Hz, 1k Hz, 2k Hz, and 4 kHz.

Results showed that the artifact responses were still present within the normal limits. One CI subject who had profound hearing has ASSR thresholds consistent with behavioral pure-tone thresholds. Results in 10 hearing subjects revealed significant differences in paired t-test between pure tone and ASSRs in all frequencies except 2 k Hz.
