The impact of listening on the high school choir student's voice

Abstract:

The purpose of this inquiry project was to research the influence of musical listening on the high school choir student's voice. Conducted over a thirty-four week period, this study involved nine high school choral students who represented a range of musical abilities and experiences. The participants were organized into three groups, one of which functioned as a control group and the other two which were provided with either classical or pop music listening selections. Participants were recorded and evaluated, interviewed and asked to provide written reflections at different points in the study. The data suggest student voices can emulate the tone quality and timbre of other voices but it takes time and constant and consistent exposure to a specific type of music in order for students' voice to begin emulating the characteristics of that genre or given piece of music. The implications of these findings along with ideas for additional research are discussed.
