Becoming Local
by Stephens, Liz, M.S., UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY, 2007, 66 pages; 1445084

Abstract:

A cultural memoir, this work examined my personal experience in the Intermountain West, with reflection primarily on my own experiences, but also on scholarship already done on the region in memoir, literature, cultural studies, folklore, and geography. In my writing I explored connections between the written works and my life in the West. This thesis is narrative nonfiction.

I considered my move from Los Angeles, California, to the small rural town of Wellsville, Utah, as an experience that offered a microcosm of a more universal search for identity. My background in Los Angeles led me to examine personal and regional identity in terms of performed behaviors. In narrative form, the work begins with my move to the Intermountain West and ends with my move away from Wellsville.
