Poor little motherless girls: The missing white mother in Southern fiction and the effects of her absence on the female characters of Eudora Welty and Carson McCullers
by Hall, Jamie Yvonne, M.A., UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS, 2007, 79 pages; 1442364

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to explore the absence of white mothers in modern southern fiction and the effects that the absence of white mothers has on the daughters. In order to fully engage this topic, a brief synopsis of southern cultural and social traditions will be discussed. The absence of white southern mothers is chiefly discussed in terms of the high mortality rate of pregnant women in the South, the popular use of black domestic workers to aid in the care of white children, and the authorial choice of southern women writers to omit southern white mothers and for what purpose.
