Abstract: In this thesis, I discuss, in tandem, the careers of art dealer, Martha Jackson, and artist, Paul Jenkins, to demonstrate their integral participation in the internationalization of the modern art market during the mid-twentieth century. The chapters of this thesis develop a history of this relationship through milestones in their conjunctive careers in relation to specific locations around the world. Utilizing the archival materials related to Jackson and Jenkins at the UB Anderson Gallery, in combination with scholarly materials, a consistent pattern of their involvement around the world is evident. By recounting their connections, influences, and participation in New York, Paris, Venice, and Japan, it is clear that they were committed to the creation of a worldwide market and that Jackson and Jenkins were amongst a key group of individuals that led to the internationalization of the art market we recognize today.
