Implementation of a magnetic device to rotate a stent

Abstract:

Brain aneurysms constitute a serious health problem that is difficult to treat. This paper presents a methodology to treat aneurysms by using a magnetic guidance system (MGS). An asymmetric stent is rotated intravascularly to reduce the blood flow into the aneurysm. The MGS consists of a magnetic device attached to the asymmetric stent and an external homogenous magnetic field of 0.1 T. This magnetic field puts a torque on the magnetic moment thereby rotating the stent. For the magnetic device two alternatives with the required magnetic moment of 0.005 Am2 - a permanent magnet and a coil - are considered. The use of a cylindrical Neodymium magnet is proposed. The coil approach is impractical due to demagnetizing effects that increase the required current to dangerous levels. Finally, an approach using the gradient of an inhomogeneous magnetic field for the rotation is discussed. However, it turns out to be technically not realizable.
