Rethinking the commercial building: An investigation into the use of precast concrete as permanent formwork for reinforced concrete in commercial building construction
by Carr, James William, M.Arch., STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT BUFFALO, 2006, 123 pages; 1431941

Abstract:

The aim of this project is to devise a system for constructing habitable, sustainable, long-lasting and readily adaptable commercial buildings using three-dimensional precast concrete components to provide permanent formwork for an in-situ concrete core. A system for constructing such a building is presented here, following basic principles of ecologically responsible design, habitability and efficient construction.

A brief investigation into the history of the commercial building is followed with an overview of conventional precast concrete building practice and a discussion of the practicalities of implementing designs that utilize the proposed construction method. Issues that should be addressed in the design process are outlined, followed by the development of a building system that meets these objectives.
