Quantitative study of the perceived value of the IPMA-CP certification

Abstract:

Although there are thousands of articles, periodicals, and studies conducted regarding certifications, very few address the IPMA-HR certification. The focus of this study was to address the gap in the literature related to determining the perceived value of the International Public Manager Association Certified Professional (IPMA-CP) certification. There are over 2,500 certifications across all industries, including information technology. However, library research findings revealed there was no study conducted related to the perceived value of the IPMA-CP. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the independent variables (gender, education, age, salary, ethnicity, length of Human Resources (HR) career, region, or supervisory role) and the dependent variable (satisfaction level of Certified IPMA-CP participants). This quantitative study used the Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT) instrument with a different population using a multiple regression to analyze the results. The studies using the PVCT provided a stable and consistent measure of perceived value. This study provides information to managers, human resource professionals and other groups, including other certifications for employment, by addressing the lack of knowledge related to the perceived value of certification specifically within human resources. The research revealed that there are relationships to intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction for the participants. These areas add value to the organization in terms or recruitment and retention. The data revealed that individuals who supervised were more satisfied with certification than those who did not supervise.
